The most common thing we are asked is which size Otentik sunshade a customer should purchase. Here are a few things that can help you choose:
First, do you want to be able to stand underneath it? If so, the large sunshade is probably the way to go. The poles are 7ft tall and will give enough headroom for most non-Shaq-sized humans.
Second, how many people do you plan on using it for? If it’s just you and another friend (preferably of the furry, four-legged variety) the small should suffice. It’s super lightweight and a breeze to setup. For more than a couple people you’ll probably want either the medium or large. The medium is enough for 2-5 people, depending on time of day and your setup. The best case scenario is steady wind (around 5-15mph) and sun overhead. Earlier or later in the day you’ll get less shaded space. Luckily though, if there’s light wind (or none at all) you can move the poles so the lower side is towards the rising or setting sun, maximizing the amount of shade. For more than 4 or 5 people, you’ll definitely need the large. It’s tall enough that you can stand underneath it, particularly if there’s a wind to lift it up. For no wind days, you can certainly purchase an extra pole or two for more height! =)
Third, what kind of beaches/locations do you intend to use it at? The Otentik sunshade is incredibly versatile. Set it up at the beach, a soccer game, for a backyard BBQ party or camping. The possibilities are endless! Here are some things to consider:
- Crowded/narrow beaches: Since you need to stretch the sunshade out fully, be courteous of those around you. If you know your beaches don’t have much room, opt for one of the smaller sizes. If you just gotta have the large, there’s always the option to shorten the ropes by tying an overhand knot and bringing the bags closer to the sunshade itself. Nonetheless, it’ll still take up an 8x9ft space plus a few feet out for each sandbag from the corner.
- No wind areas (back yard, etc): if you want head space for several people, go with a medium or large with an extra pole. Or try attaching it to trees, or another structure, to give yourself more height for guests.
- Pack size/weight: if you’re traveling and want to put it in your suitcase, make sure you have a bag that it’ll fit in. Small and medium pack up to around 22 or 24″, depending on how well you fold it up. The large is about 26″. You can always take the poles out of the sunshade, and place them at an angle in your carry on or checked bag. Measure your suitcase to see if it’ll fit! =)
